The Beatles Story - 1973 BBC Radio Special [Marconi Experiment Archives] - 14 CDs

Post by bobzilla »

This was requested, and I couldn't find it already shared on here anywhere, so here it is. (Also, yes, I know it's on Mega, and some people don't like Mega, but I'm not re-uploading 3.6GB every 2 weeks when WeTransfer takes it down.)

"The Beatles Story"
1973 BBC Radio Special
source: MASTER 2-trk reels > DART XP PRO > disk
-------------------------------------------
This is an UNEDITED STEREO BBC RADIO special that was produced in 1973 by the BBC in London. This radio special has now been carefully transferred to STEREO CD's from an original set of "VIRGIN" 2trk MASTER reel-to-reel tapes.

These 2trk reels are BRAND NEW old stock reels that were NEVER PLAYED ON THE AIR by any radio station. I was the 1st one to break the seal on each reel box.

*****The sound quality is SUPERB!*****

The transfer was made using TASCAM pro equipt. & an ALIENWARE AREA 51 computer! The original analog "1973 STEREO SOUND" is quality preserved for future generations to enjoy. The entire special is narrated by the BBC's own BRIAN MATTHEWS.

Thanks for this one.

FYI I've been receiving quite recently emails from WE Transfer notifying me that a transfer was about to expire and asking me if I wanted to change its expiry date.

I've just downloaded these and the episodes are only around 45 minutes in total. As mentioned on the other posting, I downloaded the series when it was rebroadcast in 2010 on BBC Radio 6 and each episode is between 55 & 58 minutes. Could it be that the shorter episodes are truncated versions for export, where overseas broadcasters would insert adverts to make up the one hour programme ? The downside is that the longer versions are 160k MP3 files. I had a quick compare of Part 1 and the Bill Harry interview is missing from the shorter version (between 'Maggie Mae' & 'Lucille'). If anyone wants to compare them, here's Part 1.

It would be interesting to hear how long FileUnderT's cassette versions are.

PS. Bobzilla - hope you don't take offence at me jumping in like this

20% less airtime per episode??? That might be the corporate sponsored U.S. edition! 10 minutes per episode would be drastically noticeable. Such overt variation never goes unnoticed by Beatles enthusiasts. And, why reels? Were those to make lacquers from? I thought the sets were sent out as LPs. Even if the reels were sent to radio stations, the odds of finding a complete set of N.O.S.(new old stock) seem completely non-existent. So, without knowing the details of its pedigree/provenance...we might consider that the show has never been heard in this sound quality. I can't imagine reel-reel tape being practical. It is too labor intensive, too damage prone, and possibly already phased out by efficiency consultants. It seems like the BBC could avoid most problems by pressing this series on LPs for regional broadcast. I'm only guessing...
Is it possible to speed up audio so that 55 minutes plays in 45 minutes?
Maybe with AI but this is older than that!
Why haven't we heard of it before?
It might even be that two versions were presented for consideration...
And SOMEHOW the short edit was not noticed by anyone.
Details as they come in!
(Thank you!)

Yes, I was just logging in to ask the same question...why are these 45mins approx when discogs and other Internet references have them at approx 55mins each.

Also this has 14 episodes, not 13, which means it is from the 1974 version...but that is still reported to be made up of 55min episodes. The theory it's an export edit seems the most plausible explanation.

Is there a rip of the actual transcription discs doing the rounds?

So I found the longer set in the Some Old Interviews set (in mp3). I don't know where they got their version, but I went ahead and uploaded it to the same folder as the other set on Mega. It's in the folder titled "The Beatles Story - 1972 - BBC 1 [mp3 but longer episodes]"

The mp3 version is 2 hours and 28 minutes longer, which is quite a bit!

The US version was shortened so the broadcasters could insert ads. That's quite a common thing for the BBC to do. In fact, they still do it. The "international" versions of popular tv series like Silent Witness are all 50min, whereas the UK originals are 58min. Sometimes these shorter versions are even released on dvd.
