There should not be any artifacts unless Britt tried to break down the vocal extract further than neccesary and pan them too wide. This is one of the fatal mistakes with pulling vocals apart. They did have the capacity to move the beginning part to the center, according to what you just said. It just sounds weird to have only one channel, even if it's only for a few seconds. Your mix takes care of that annoyance.
